Breakfast Topic: Who could be a new world boss in Cataclysm?

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on March 1st, 2010

One thing that was missing from the Wrath expansion, conspicuously or not, was a world boss on par with those such as Kazzak and the Emerald Dragons . For better or for worse, Blizzard completely removed them from the game, reserving the massive figures towering over the landscape for instanced quests or dungeons. Blizzard touched a bit on why they’ve not used world bosses in Wrath in the recent Twitter developer chat. They observed that there are issues with the bosses that have prevented them from feeling comfortable making more world bosses, such as issues with groups racing to bosses, or the ability of people outside raid groups to deliberately mess up boss attempts. On the other side of the coin, though, they did imply that they like world bosses, and will probably implement more in Cataclysm if and when they can find a satisfactory work-around for the problems. The Light and How to Swing It: Your group is on fire

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 28th, 2010

Every Sunday, Chase Christian of The Light and How to Swing It invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. This week, we examine how to handle situations where your entire party is taking serious damage and there’s nothing you can do about it (or is there?). I don’t know about you, but I’ve woken up in the middle of the night, on more than one occasion, from a terrible nightmare. I’m not talking about the Emerald Nightmare, you’ll have to read Stormrage or talk to some tree-hugging druid if you want to hear about that. I’m referring to something similar to Argent Confessor Paletress’ Confess attack ; nightmares with a far more sinister source: memories of failed encounters from the past. My guild’s first attempt on the Twin Val’kyr has caused me more sleepless nights than any other so far. It was early in the week of their release, and so nobody in the raid had ever seen the Twins before. With no prior knowledge, we pulled the bosses blindly. My co-healer, a resto shaman, disconnected immediately due to an unknown problem. Suddenly I was faced with 10 targets all taking damage from a passive AoE aura , two tanks that were being hit pretty decently themselves, and random DPS in the group losing large chunks of their life at what seemed to be random times as balls of energy bounced around the room. This is my nightmare: the entire raid is on fire at once, and I’m all alone. Spiritual Guidance: Ghostcrawler on priests

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 28th, 2010

Every Sunday (and the occasional weekday) Spiritual Guidance offers holy and discipline priests advice on how to wield the holy light and groove to the disco night. Your hostess Dawn Moore will provide the music. There was a great priest thread on the official World of Warcraft healing forums late last week. The thread caps at 30 pages, then spills into another thread for further discussion. The original post is from a priest who also heals as a druid, and is currently unhappy with the state of priests in Icecrown Citadel. The poster asks for in-depth feedback from other priests with healing alts who are happy with the priest class in ICC. The thread remains on topic and doesn’t get too trolly before Ghostcrawler steps in on page 7 and gives a simple breakdown of how he plays priest. He remains in the thread for quite some time and provides readers with a good insight on how he and Blizzard feel about various aspects of priests at this time. If you missed this thread, I will be summarizing the highlights of what Ghostcrawler said and providing some of my own thoughts and analysis. All the World’s a Stage: Realistic touches to an unrealistic person

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 28th, 2010

The great challenge of World of Warcraft roleplay is that, at its very nature, you’re playing a fantastic character. The most mundane character concept is still capable of dropping immense damage and going toe-to-toe (alongside some friends) with some of the Lich King’s most powerful minions. Then, on the opposite side, you could be playing an extra-dimensional alien beholden to the fundamental powers of Light, walking around the planet while attempting to revitalize the very meaning of Good and Right. All player characters in WoW are fantasy beings, who have seen and done things about which mere mortals can only dream. So why is this a challenge? Because this fantastic situation can make it very difficult to make your character believable. A successful character is not only interesting and fun, but also someone with whom the audience and players can empathize. If your character is so far outside mortal ken, they will no longer be accessible and believable, but instead wander unhappily into the Twilight -like realm of the “Mary Sue.” Let’s take a look behind the jump and explore how to make your character a little more realistic. Continue reading All the World’s a Stage: Realistic touches to an unrealistic person Filed under: All the World’s a Stage (Roleplaying) All the World’s a Stage: Realistic touches to an unrealistic person originally appeared on WoW.com on Sun, 28 Feb 2010 20:00:00 EST. [1.Local]: One does not simply walk into holiday bosses

Reader comments — ahh, yes, the juicy goodness following a meaty post. [1.Local] ducks past the swinging doors to see what readers have been chatting about in the back room over the past week . Our friendly neighborhood Dungeon Finder will become the one and only method of accessing seasonal holiday bosses, come Patch 3.3.3. No longer will you need to worry about which players in your group have their daily summons available or whether your roll will be enough to win such rare but delicious vanity items such as the Big Love Rocket or the Horseman’s Reins. Everything will be streamlined and automated now — but that doesn’t mean the process won’t still prove to be a significant journey. Al : One does not simply walk into holiday bosses. Kurash : Not with ten thousand men could you do this! It is folly! mtsadowski : I will do it. I will tank the holiday bosses … only I do not know the way. Henrah : I will help you bear this burden, mtsadowski, as long as it is yours to bear. tulipblossom : If, by my life or death, I can protect you, I will. You have my sword. Bril : And my axe. D4 : And my pet. MarcSpirit : Great! Where are we going? – End of Disk One – Join us for Disk Two of this week’s [1.Local], after the break. Submarines coming in Cataclysm

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 28th, 2010

While we didn’t get the full fledged Maelstrom expansion that some people were predicting, Cataclysm still promises to have some water-related content, such as the Abyssal Maw, the elemental plane of water . And where there’s water, you need a boat. The recent Twitter developer chat revealed that we will, in fact, be using new transports to get to certain places in Cataclysm , and that these transport would be submarines, built by the gnomes and goblins for their respective factions. Dance Studio still "on the list," say developers

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 28th, 2010

The dance studio is perhaps the most enduring piece of vapor ware in WoW to date. First hinted at in the original WotLK trailer and announced in the months leading up to release, it was conspicuously absent from the finished product, however, and now that we’re on the final major patch of the expansion, it still hasn’t made it in game. The closest we’ve gotten to any sort of official word on it, barring the dance battle April fool’s joke , is from a Curse interview with the developers that suggests the dance studio won’t be in Wrath at all. Man in the middle attacks circumventing authenticators

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 28th, 2010

It has been brought to our attention that Blizzard’s technical support department is currently handling a security exploit that is, in a limited capacity, circumventing authenticators. Before we get into the details, please do not panic . This does not make authenticators worthless, and it is not yet a widespread problem. Do not remove your authenticator because of this, and do not base your decision on whether or not to buy an authenticator off of this. They are still very useful, and your account is much safer with an authenticator than it is without one. This is not the only report of this that we’ve seen, but it is the first time that a Blizzard representative has openly acknowledged that there is something afoot . For a full account of what happened, check the thread on the EU Technical Support forums. To sum up: There is a piece of malware ( emcor.dll is what is being reported at the moment) that is being used as a hijacking tool to facilitate Man-in-the-Middle attacks on users. Kropaclus After looking into this, it has been escalated, but it is a Man in the Middle attack. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man-in-the-middle_attack This is still perpetrated by key loggers, and no method is always 100% secure. source To explain in the simplest way possible, instead of data being broadcast directly to Blizzard when trying to log in to your account, that data is being broadcast to a third party via this malware. This includes your authenticator code. Rather than you logging into your account, the hacker on the other end does so. They log into your account, clear out your characters, and move around virtual funds to fulfill orders from players buying gold. This method of circumvention has been theorized since the release of the key fobs, but it has only now started to actually happen. New race/class combos will not be live before Cataclysm

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 28th, 2010

In a very short answer, the devs confirmed in the recent Twitter developer chat that the new race and class combinations will not go live until Cataclysm itself goes live. In a way, this isn’t too much a surprise. Despite some rumors to the contrary , we didn’t get death knights until the first day of Wrath , and we had to wait for Burning Crusade to play draenei and blood elves. So with that in mind, it makes sense that we have to wait until the last possible moment for yet another new breed of player characters. That said, it is probably true that the new race/class combinations are a bit different from the examples above. After all, they simply take existing races and existing classes and put them together, so it might seem that it wouldn’t be too hard to just turn them on. Patch 3.3.3 PTR: New battleground mark conversion

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 26th, 2010

Check out the latest from the PTR — battleground mark to honor conversion is now up, with each battleground mark you’ve squirreled away worth an astonishing two thousand honor per mark . For people that have been PvPing since vanilla, that adds up to a lot of honor. Thankfully, there’s places to spend it. PvP Mounts Level 60 Legacy PvP Armor – page 1 , page 2 , page 3 Level 60 Legacy PvP Weapons – page 1 , page 2 , page 3 Level 70 Outland PvP Armor – page 1 , page 2 Level 70 Outland PvP Trinkets – page 1 , page 2 Check the gallery below for a full list of new prices on PvP mounts and legacy PvP gear. As of the current PTR build the new Commendations of Service are not account-bound, which means you can’t send them off to alts like their Wintergrasp counterparts — meaning players may be swimming in gems when the patch finally goes live. If this changes, we’ll let you know. Stay tuned for more 3.3.3 PTR info as it develops! Around Azeroth: Boris the spider

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 26th, 2010

We’ve seen the big pet bug before, but this one is literally a big pet bug. Elennoko of <Large War Club> on Wyrmrest Accord witnessed a minor incident involving his hunter friend’s pet spider, an AV queue, and an Elixir of Giant Growth. He writes, “It apparently has had too much to eat, and is craving something … bigger than a fly.” Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We’d love to see them on Around Azeroth ! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next! Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word “Azeroth” in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing — use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards, Val’kyr on mounts, or pictures of the Ninja Turtles in Dalaran. Older screenshots can be found here . The Daily Quest: It’s all about the heals

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 26th, 2010

Here at WoW.com we’re on a Daily Quest (which we try to do every day, honest) to bring you interesting, informative and entertaining WoW -related links from around the blogosphere. Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we ought to follow? Just leave us a comment and you may see it here tomorrow! Today we’re talking healers. You know healers, don’t you? The players who tend to stand in the back of a group and do simply terrible DPS? Damage meters aside, if you’re not a healer, keeping your healer happy should rank high on yout to-do list, because who else out there is going to pull you from the brink of death over and over again? So while the non-healers in the audience are out buying candy and flowers for the healer in your life, the healers in the audience are going to sit back and look at some recent thoughts on healing from around the net. Blessing of Kings discusses healer hubris . Holypaladin.net talks about the Flash of Light build for holdydins . Tree Bark Jacket covers healing for Sindragosa — some of it’s druid-specfic, but some of it will be useful to anyone attempting Sindragosa. Wugan on Flow discusses healing for Professor Putricide for resto shamans. (If you’re attempting the Professor and having trouble, you may be interested in reading Raid Rx and Ready Check on the same subject.) The Physician’s Log covers solo-healing Sarh +3 as a paladin . Patch 3.3.3 PTR: Minor Jewelcrafting changes

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 25th, 2010

Yesterday an updated list of changes for PTR patch 3.3.3 was released. Ranging from new pets and mounts to the LFD dungeon stats being tracked , there have been a lot of tweaks. Jewelcrafting is no exception to the rules of change and like other professions is seeing some small changes. Icy Prism now requires Frozen Orb, Chalcedony x 1 (Down from 3), Shadow Crystal x 1 (Down from 3), Dark Jade x 1 (Down from 3) Intricate Bone Figurine (Daily Quest) – Craft an Intricate Bone Figurine by combining the Proto Dragon Bone with a Sun Crystal and a Dark Jade . (Old – Chalcedony + Dark Jade ) These are small changes, but for many Jewelcrafters they are welcome ones. On many servers due to the rising number of tanks, Chalcedony can be very difficult to come by on the auction house and relying on the random number generator can sometimes leave you high and dry when you are prospecting for specific gems. Lowering the amount of gems required for the Icy Prism makes it a tad bit easier for aspiring jewelers to obtain the various gems they may need to level their profession to the skill cap, as well as making it slightly more profitable when you manage to gain a good gem like a Cardinal Ruby or Dragon’s Eye . Just like Inscription having the material components reduced for many of it’s recipes and the Titansteel cooldown being removed , I think we will continue to see this trend as Cataclysm approaches. Making it easier for players to hit their profession skill caps before the expansion drops is a very good way to get people ready for when the skill cap is raised again. Raid Rx: Frustrations of 2-healing a 10-player raid

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 25th, 2010

Every week, Raid Rx will help you quarterback your healers to victory! Your host is Matt Low , the grand poobah of World of Matticus and a founder of No Stock UI , a WoW blog for all things UI, macro, and addon related. This week, I’ll be addressing the whole 2 healer thing in 10 mans. There are many things that just happen to annoy the living heck out of me and I wanted to get it out here to see if anyone else shared those frustrations with me. Who knows? Maybe I’m the only one. Maybe as a non-healer, you’ll key in on several bad habits to make life easier for your healers. But two healing raids isn’t quite the easiest thing to do in the world. Have to give a hat tip to Domni on Plus Heal since I know I’m not the only one who just wants to randomly rage out from time to time. So what greatly annoys me here? Spiritual Guidance: Raiding Icecrown Citadel Part 1

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 25th, 2010

Once, every week, Fox Van Allen takes control of Spiritual Guidance in an attempt to corrupt all the touchy-feely holy priests out there. I mean, seriously, you want to *heal* things? If you really wanted to heal, shouldn’t you have rolled a shammy or something? Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Icecrown Citadel . Over the next few weeks, Spiritual Guidance will be providing start-to-finish coverage of the Wrath of the Lich King’s final and greatest raid instance. This week, we start at the very beginning. The first four battles were designed to be quite accessible to beginning raiders and PUGs, with a relatively low difficulty level as compared to the rest of the content inside. The encounters inside include a cuddly bone dragon monster thing (so cute!), what appears to be the result of Kel’Thuzad after his sex-change operation, a battle involving ROCKETBEARS , and… a lone orc — against the might of the Alliance? Anyway. Step in, wipe your feet, and let’s earn you that achievement that all those PUG raid leaders demand you have. The Art of War(craft): Introductory guide to fighting priests

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 25th, 2010

Zach enjoys PvP almost as much as he enjoys eating his wife’s phenomenal banoffee pies. That’s saying a lot because, damn, those banoffee pies are freaking awesome melanges of succulent toffee, rich chocolate syrup, perfectly ripe bananas, and luscious whipped cream on a deliciously molded graham crust. He’s probably snuck down to the fridge and grabbed a slice now. Kind of like how those pesky rogues steal the flag when you’re not looking. Priests are an interesting study for this series, primarily because out of all the game’s ten classes, they are the only ones with two talent trees devoted to healing. This means that two out of three times, you’ll be encountering a healing priest. That’s not exact math, but you know what I mean. Shadow, the class’ DPS tree, has had an interesting history with viability and acceptance, having been known as a PvP tree in the game’s early years, later gaining raid viability and losing PvP luster. In the current environment, shadow remains a popular PvP tree but it is far easier to find success in Arenas and Battlegrounds with a healing spec. In this regard, discipline, the mitigation tree formerly considered to be complementary and gimmicky has shone. Naturally, most fights against priests, particularly discipline-specced ones, will be long and difficult for most classes. That said, let’s take a moment to examine the various abilities used by priests on the battlefield. A priest’s repertoire of common spells is rather limited, and most of their key abilities will depend on their spec. A rundown of stuff to expect from them after the break. Totem Talk: Restoration talents and glyphs

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 25th, 2010

Want to be a sultan of swing healing? A champion of Chain Heal? Totem Talk : Restoration will show you how. Brought to you by Joe Perez, otherwise known as Lodur from World of Matticus and the For The Lore podcast. Last week in Totem Talk: Restoration 101 we talked a bit about the basics of being a healing minded shaman. Continuing in that vein today I would like to focus on the restoration tree’s talents as well as glyphs. We will cover more specifics on other aspects of restoration in the weeks to come. The restoration talent tree is very strong and versatile, filled with a lot of the talents focused on augmenting your existing ability to heal. It is also very lean in the fact that it does not have many talents that you need to absolutely avoid, and they all have a very distinct role in the shaman toolbox. These talents also provide you with key spells essential to your success as a healer as well as our most iconic spells. While we may not have as many healing spells as a holy priest, our toolbox is still very versatile and it does the job quite well. Starfall and Nature’s Grasp PTR changes

Posted by Encroyable.com | wow / mmorpg | Posted on February 25th, 2010

Yesterday was a very good day to be a balance druid in the World of Warcraft . While things seemed a bit rocky at the start of the PTR, the most recent build held two changes that are certainly going to benefit all of our feathery friends out there. The first of these changes was an increase in the damage and scaling of Starfall , the second was a change to the way in which Nature’s Grasp functions. To start with Starfall, the updated patch notes do not tell the entire story of this change. In order to clarify things, Ghostcrawler made a few statements on the Damage Dealing forums about it. Although there have been several posts on the matter, the most important was this: The Starfall change is difficult to patch note because of the nature of the spell, but I’ll share the numbers so that the theorycrafters among you can plug them in. It’s a significant boost to the spell’s damage. Initially, we had designed the spell to be more AE focused, but that hasn’t been super useful for a class that also has Hurricane. Rather than adding another nuke we thought it made more sense to make the 51 pointer something that really delivers on damage. Yes it can be countered. PvP is designed with the intent that things can be countered.
