Starcraft II sells 3 million

Posted by Encroyable.com On September - 1 - 2010 0 Comment

Blizzard releases first-month sales total for Wings of Liberty; real-time strategy sequel on track to meet analyst expectations.   When Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty was released, analysts were bullish with their estimates, with projections of as many as 7 million copies this year. Blizzard is making headway towards these figures, as the publisher today announced one-month sales of 3 million copies. Starcraft II sold 1 million copies on July 27 when it hit stores across the world and a further 500,000 copies on day two , making it the fastest-selling real-time strategy game of all time, according to Blizzard. While these numbers don’t come close to matching those generated by World of Warcraft– Wrath of the Lich King sold 2.8 million copies in its first day –Blizzard’s CEO Mike Morhaime today declared himself pleased by “how strongly the global community has already embraced [Starcraft II].” The Corporal will see you now…all 3 million of you. Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets, who made the 7 million sales estimate, said today that the one-month figures show that “sales were not as front-loaded as some had expected” and that Starcraft II’s numbers “are tracking slightly ahead of our 4 million estimate for [the July-September quarter].” These estimates include some monetization of sales in South Korea, one of the major markets for the game, which Sebastian said had not yet had an impact on sales figures because of an extended free trial period for gamers in the Asian nation. After officially announcing the title in South Korea at the 2007 Worldwide Invitational in Seoul , Blizzard confirmed in 2008 that the game would come in three parts. Wings of Liberty, the first in the trifecta, was initially due out in 2009 but was delayed just before the holiday season . While Wings of Liberty focussed on the Terran race, the other two parts–Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void–focus on the Zerg and Protoss, respectively. Neither of the other two parts–which are technically expansions–have a release date yet. PlayStation Move review: The hardware and experience

Posted by Encroyable.com On September - 1 - 2010 0 Comment

Four years after the arrival of Wii, Sony’s take on motion controlled gaming is finally here. Well, at least it’s here at Joystiq, where we got our hands on the final hardware and initial lineup of games a couple of weeks in advance of the peripheral’s September 19 North American debut. I spent several days with Move, from the initial unboxing to putting my thoughts on the hardware together for you in this review. I also played the Move launch games from Sony and one from Ubisoft, which I’ve reviewed in the companion piece to this article . PlayStation Move, as you’ve no doubt read on the site, comes in a variety of configurations. There’s the Move controller itself, the Move controller bundled with the required PlayStation Eye camera and Sports Champions and a system bundle that includes the latter plus a PS3 console. There’s also the Move’s “nunchuk” Navigation Controller, which isn’t actually used by any of the Move-specific launch titles (but will be supported by future games and current titles, such as Heavy Rain , via patches). I received two Move controllers, one Navigation Controller and a PS Eye camera. The Navigation Controller arrived in packaging styled to match other PS3 accessories, such as the DualShock 3. The Move controllers themselves were already unboxed, though it stands to reason that they come in similarly difficult-to-open-without-spilling-blood plastic packaging. Anyway, enough background — let’s get on with the review. Mafia 2 enters UK charts, biggest launch since Red Dead Redemption

Posted by Encroyable.com On August - 31 - 2010 0 Comment

Take-Two’s crime drama, Mafia 2, debuted at the top of the UK charts last week, with Chart-Track calling it “the biggest UK game launch since Take-Two’s very own Red Dead Redemption 14 weeks ago.” Though it’s an impressive start, we’ve yet to see how the game fares in the United States, and whether sales have the stamina to recoup the costs of a lengthy development . Kane and Lynch aren’t done with their Dog Days up on the charts just yet. Despite slipping into second place this week, the duo managed a 33 percent increase in sales. Toy Story 3 and Red Dead Redemption found comfortable spots in third and fourth, respectively, and a Wii sale in the region helped boost the system-bundled Wii Sports Resort from 16 to number five. If there’s one surprise, it’s that one of Ubisoft’s Dance titles is out of the top ten. Don’t worry, Just Dance is still gettin’ down like an all-night rave at sixth, but Dance on Broadway has fallen off the stage and into row 16. Check out this week’s top selling titles after the break. How to unlock Scott Pilgrim’s Boss Rush mode

Posted by Encroyable.com On August - 26 - 2010 0 Comment

Ubisoft artist Stéphane Boutin recently put up a blog post about content cut from the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World game. Though the post is worth reading for both its behind-the-scenes info and previously unreleased art, it also included some info about the released version of the game. Boutin mentioned some “extra game modes” that “you’ll need to download or unlock if I remember correctly.” “Charles,” who helped with programming on the game, then commented on that post with a code to unlock Boss Rush mode! “I think the code for Boss Rush was something like right, right, B, R1, right, right, B, R1 … or something like that.” We can confirm that the code works in the XBLA version of the game. Total Video Games reports that it works on PS3 if circle is substituted for B, and also notes that Ubisoft was set to release this code as part of a “newsletter incentive.” A code to unlock a zombie survival mode was previously released in a trailer . Later in the comments, Boutin says that “There will be a downloadable pack with a new character and maybe the extra game modes if they aren’t unlockable right now, but i’m pretty sure that will be it.” How to unlock Scott Pilgrim’s Boss Rush mode originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Aug 2010 12:30:00 EST. Virtua Tennis 4 First Look

Posted by Encroyable.com On August - 20 - 2010 0 Comment

We pull on our tennis shoes and take to the court to hit a few balls around in our first look at this motion-driven sports game. There is an unspoken rule in the video game development industry. All motion-sensing minigame compilations must include at least one title on the disc that simulates swinging a racket. Interestingly, despite this secret handshake, to date no publisher has stepped up to the service line to bring motion to a tennis game on current generation hardware. Virtua Tennis 4 marks the latest return of the long-running and much loved franchise, and celebrates its 10 year anniversary by making the royal sport more interactive within your lounge room. Supporting both stereoscopic 3D technology and Sony’s Move camera-based peripheral, players will be able to step into the shoes of some of the world’s biggest stars. Our brief hands-on with the title gave us the chance to take to the court in a match between Roger Federer and Andy Murray. Walking onto the court–which appeared to at least for demo purposes be locked to clay and hardcourt surfaces–we looked around to admire our legions of adoring fans. The game’s 3D implementation looked reasonable with the net protruding from the foreground. Leaping straight into the action we spent our first game on the serving side, lobbing the ball into the air with a single wrist flick and using a quick downstroke to indicate we wanted it to rocket towards our opposition. Nothing in the basic service and returning mechanics should be foreign to anyone who has played Wii Sports previously. Faster wrist snaps from the peak of our arm arc put a bit more force into our serves, while an on-screen speed indicator gave us the chance to track how quickly we were getting it down the other end. Our game included only the primary Move peripheral, with no Navigation (formerly called the Move Sub controller) attachment present. As a result, we didn’t manually move our character around the screen as we would with an analog stick, but the game did a good job of automatically shifting our character to keep us within striking distance without cramping our style. Returning the ball was as simple as swinging as you would in real life, though we noticed that while late swings were punished by usually missing the ball, early arm extensions were much more forgiving, getting it over the net, but missing the crucial power to make the other player really work for it. Once we had nailed the timing, matches were slugged out from the baseline with neither player venturing towards the net. You will be able to get closer by simply taking steps towards the PlayStation Eye camera. Like previous games in the Virtua Tennis series, the action is from a third-person perspective, though in this title when you wind up for a shot, or attempt to return service, the game will drop into first-person mode with the racket becoming your only visible element as it hovers in midair. Ironically, while the title represents a natural extension of the real-world abilities most people are likely to have experienced at some point in their life, the learning curve on returning balls felt a little bit steep. Advanced players will be able to add slice, backspin, and other tennis stroke mainstays simply by aiming in the intended direction and using the wrist movements associated with the shot All of the gestures we used to play the game felt natural, though we are concerned about the potential to knock over household items around the lounge room or give doubles partners blackeyes with errant flailing. Virtua Tennis 4 is currently slated for a summer 2011 release.
