Sony Patent Describes "Degradable" Game Demos

Posted by Encroyable.com | Playstation Portable | Posted on March 5th, 2010

Developers have often struggled with game demos, and for good reason: It can be enough of a challenge hand-picking the segments that best represent a game, but if the demo winds up being too good, players might not ever invest in the retail product at all. Sony aims to fix some of that, assuming they ever act on a patent recently discovered by Siliconera. Their plan is to offer something called “degradable demos” — complete or nearly complete games in demo form, allowing players free access to a product’s full breadth of content for a limited amount of time. As time passes, however, the demo will automatically begin to pare down certain in-game features, like which levels are available or how powerful the player character is. There’s even talk of introducing more subtle tweaks like adjusting audio and video effects like brightness, color depth, and volume. All of these ideas are meant to offer consumers a broad look at a game while still encouraging them to make a purchase. One example in the patent depicts a racing game demo that, at first, has all of the tracks and cars unlocked. Those options start to disappear after a few races, leaving just one or two tracks until the full game is purchased. Another possibility shows a character brandishing an enormous sword, only to have it replaced by a wimpy dagger after six hours of demo play. Both of these scenarios allow players to stick with just the demo if they want, but anyone seriously interested in the product will be able to cough up some money to remove all those restrictions and handicaps.

Warner Bros. building Lego games through 2016

Posted by Encroyable.com | Playstation Portable | Posted on March 3rd, 2010

Publisher extends exclusive license agreement for subsidiary TT Games to create games based on Danish building block toys. There’s a bucket-load more Lego games on the way. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and Lego Systems today announced an extension to the agreement that gives TT Games the exclusive rights to make games based on the building block brand. Is that a magic wand or a yam? To date, the partnership has seen a number of high-profile successes, starting with the original Lego Star Wars in 2005, which recapped the sci-fi serial’s prequel trilogy with Lego characters pantomiming all the key scenes. It wasn’t long before the formula was applied to other properties, from the original Star Wars trilogy to Batman and Indiana Jones. To date, the TT Games Lego titles have combined to sell nearly 50 million copies worldwide. The original TT Games Lego titles were so successful they inspired Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment to acquire the company outright in 2007. A Manchester Evening News report put the buyout cost at £100 million (roughly $200 million at the time), which was more than had been paid for either Harmonix or RedOctane, two more overnight-success developers of the day. Although Warner Bros. now has plenty of time to experiment with the Lego brand, don’t expect any drastic changes to the heretofore successful formula. Lego Digital vice president Henrik Taudorf Lorensen explained in a statement that the Danish company was eager to extend the agreement due to the games’ “creative, social and non-violent” nature. TT Games Publishing managing director Tom Stone added that the company will continue to work on pairing the Lego name with other intellectual properties, those of both Warner Bros. and other companies. Two more Lego titles from TT Games are set to hit shelves this year. First up will be Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 in May, with Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars retracing the animated TV series’ steps this fall. Japan Review Check: Chinatown Wars, What Did I Do to… 3

Some of the highlights from next week’s crop of Japanese console game releases, courtesy of Famitsu magazine’s review pages: – Yuusha no Kuseni Namaikida 3D (8/9/8/8, 33 points): The new game in the recently-renamed What Did I Do do Deserve This, My Lord?! series is a pretty standard update. “The additional water element adds some more depth to dungeon building,” one reviewer said. “Thanks partly to that, the difficulty level’s higher than before, but get to grips with the system and you’ll progress well enough.” Another editor thought a bit better of the challenge level: “The kind tutorial, an instruction manual that could be mistaken for a strategy guide, and adjustable difficulty settings make this addictive even for beginners.”
